Delapre Abbey Stables - Remodel. Repurpose. Reuse.

The focus of this project was to consider the contextual and design issues when proposing the remodeling of a historic building, in this case, the conversion of a 19th century stable block to a light industrial complex, specialising in artisan production methods using traditional and contemporary technologies.

The second-year Interior Design students were given the following brief:

"The stable block is located in the grounds of Delapre Abbey, a Grade II* Listed building, that falls under the management of the Delapre Abbey Preservation Trust and is currently undergoing phase one of a restoration plan due to be completed in September 2016. The 19th century stable block is part of phase two and as yet no specific use has been identified. The Trust is interested in exploring the possibility of opening a light industry collective comprising of micro production units and appropriate public engagement spaces. In keeping with the vision of the renovation plan, an agenda of cultural, social, economic and environmental sustainability should drive the programme and design proposal."
