    STEAM Event

    February 8, 2017

On 8th of February, we took part in a STEAM event, which involved 15 local schools bringing groups of 8-year-old girls into the university. The children engaged in a variety of activities aimed to encourage girl to into science, technology, engineering, art and maths. Product Design hosted an activity called "Scrambled for Time", where the objective was to build a ramp out of K'Nex to roll an egg as far as possible for the chance to win a 3D printed prize of 'Norman the egg.' To engage the children, we made a user persona and backstory about Norman. His family needed to reach him and this was the reason they needed to build the ramp. We spoke about how to get the egg the furthest, describing the length and angle of the slope. We hope that through this event we've encouraged girls to consider these subjects as potential careers.
